It was the showdown Game of Thrones fans had been waiting years for, with Daenerys Targaryen finally facing off against Cersei Lannister.

But it’s safe to say things didn’t go quite down the way fans would have liked, with Dany going full ‘mad queen’ and burning King's Landing to the ground, slaughtering scores of innocent women and children in the process.

In shocking scenes, Dany refused to accept the surrender of the Westeros capital, instead turning on the entire city and razing buildings.

Dany’s decision shocks those closest to her, with both Tyrion Lannister and Jon Snow watching in horror as the taking of King’s Landing turns into a bloodbath.

Her attack ends only ends when the city is decimated, with Cersei buried alive in the red keep alongside Jaime, who returned at the last minute to be by his twin sister’s side.

While Dany’s transformation had been alluded to this season (remember what Varys said last week?) it was still a shock to see a Game of Thrones hero go full-blown villain in just a matter of episodes.

Remember, Dany began Game of Thrones as the bullied and neglected younger sister of Viserys, who was sold off to Khal Drogo to be his khaleesi as a teenager.

She was raped, lost her unborn child and husband but still managed to be a fair and merciful ruler in her early years.

While she had taken some brutal steps in her time as queen (such as the burning of the Tarlys last season) Dany never purposefully hurt innocents and even locked up her dragons underground at one stage after Drogon killed a young boy.

So understandably her sudden, drastic change of personality had some viewers scratching their heads.

Daenerys has never had a compulsion to kill innocent people... in all that she's been through she's always directed her hate that people that deserved it. I don't understand what happened in this episode.

dany locked up her BABIES after drogon killed ONE CHILD but she’s going to burn a million innocents? make it make sense

As Dany burned innocent people, I couldn’t help but wonder if the writers sought to burn her entire character arc as well. #GameofThrones

despite how upset most of us are with daenerys’ outcome this season. my heart goes out to emilia clarke.

couldn’t imagine falling in love with portraying a character for over ten years only to witness them ruin her without being able to do a single thing #GameofThrones

#Daenerys went full on mad Targaryen. This doesn't even make sense. They surrendered! Only #GameofThrones can humanise a Cersei and turn a Dany into a monster.

But according to Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B Weiss, Dany’s behaviour in this week’s episode hasn’t come out of the blue.

“There is something chilling about the way Dany has responded to the death of her enemies,” Benioff said in HBO’s Inside the Episode feature.

“Even when you look back to season one when Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa) gives the golden crown to Viserys, and her reaction of watching her brother’s head melted off. He was a terrible brother, so I don’t think anyone was crying when Viserys died, but …”

Weiss also added that Dany’s decision to burn King’s Landing to the ground wasn’t planned and had been spurred by her emotions.

“I don’t think she decided ahead of time that she was going to do what she did. Then she sees the Red Keep, which is to her the home that her family built when they first came over to this country 300 years ago,” Weiss explained.

“It’s in this moment on the walls of King’s Landing where she’s looking at that symbol of everything that was taken from her, when she makes the decision to make this personal.”

Game of Thrones series finale will air on Foxtel and Foxtel Now on Monday, May 20 at 11am and 8.30pm.
